The 7-team PEI Midget AAA Hockey League gets underway on Tuesday night when the PEI and Atlantic Champion Mid-Isle Robert's Petro Canada Matrix open up the season against the Charlottetown Abbies at 7:30 at the APM Centre. "We are looking for another great year." Says head coach, Mike Lord, "We have 10 players returning including last year's leading scorer Jordan Mayhew and Jonathan Richards at forward, while Aaron Nunn and Ryan Murray will anchor the defence in front of two new goaltenders."

The Abbies were not far behind the Matrix last season after losing the island finals in the decisive fifth game and will have nine new players who will be seeing their first Midget AAA action this season. "With that," says head coach, Ryan Ramsay, "it may take some time to adapt, but solid goaltending, a strong defense core and a balanced group of forwards will contibute to the success of our team-first approach."

The Pownal Gaudet's Auto Body Red Devils will visit the Sherwood Drug Mart Falcons on Thursday night at 8:20 at Cody Banks.  "With 13 returning players, the team is looking to build on progress made with a young team last year".  Says head coach Shane Kelly.  "Returning goaltenders, Bo Ford and Matt Derry will be relied on to improe the team's goals against this season along with defensemen Will Connolly, Logan MacKinnon, and Tyler Baker.  Veteran forwards Cody McGuirk, Stefan MacDonald, and Brady Doiron will lead the way up front".  The Falcons say that the forwards will be a deeper bunch, led by veterans Connor Smith and Lucas Holmes.  Look for the defense to be improved as Sherwood returns five defensemen led by Brodie Watts.  Cody MacDonald and Geoff Gaudet will man the pipes.

On Friday night, the Matrix will travel to Souris, the new home ice of the Kings County Kings. Game time will be 7:55 at the Eastern Kings Sportsplex.

Saturday night will be the kickoff to the Western Regals' season when they play host to the Summerside Hemphill GM Capitals at 7:30 in Alberton. The Capitals will be icing a veteran squad with ten third-year players. At the forward position head coach Bruce Cameron will be looking to returning players Brett and Brandon Adams, Griffin Gallant, Mitch Girard and Tayler Albert to provide leadership and production, while Tyler LeBlanc leads a strong defense. In goal, Tyler Cameron and Wylie Tanton are returning. Cameron believes this squad has the combination of size and speed to contend.

The first week wraps up with a couple of rare Sunday night contests when the Capitals host the Falcons at Credit Union Place at 5:00 and the Abbies host the Kings at 5:50 at Simmons. The 30-game regular season will conclude on February 11th.
